This workshop will present a way of thinking about Adlerian theoretical concepts and how they correlate with the use of art in counseling. Participants will explore the value of using Adlerian art therapy in a group setting. 3 CEU’s available!

Judy Sutherland, PhD, ATR-BC, LCPC, is professor emerita at the Adler School of Professional Psychology where she developed and was the Program Director of the M.A. in Counseling Psychology: Art Therapy. Her retirement includes doing supervision with post-graduate students.

Institute of Chicago, and the people they work with at their

Art Therapy students participating in The Art of Connection include
April Abesamis, Avery Blair-Wilson, Rifi Bleichman, Amy L. Cavazos,
Cassie Lynn Dobbs, Michelle Ettlinger, Katrina Funk, Joyce Garside,
GraceAnn Goll, Jae Hoon Kim, Charlotte Kimlick, Terri Kuberski,
Stephany Latham, Emily MacArthur, Cass Magiera, Giselle Pagani,
Jeannette Perkal, Kate Pfeiffer, and Hannah Shinozaki.

The diversity of artwork on display in The Art of Connection reflects
the wide range of people, places, and approaches encompassed by art
therapy. As a curricular requirement of the program, each art therapy
graduate student works at an internship site where the power of art
making is used to help people communicate their stories. Whether the
work produced provides a respite from an emotional storm, or depicts
an image directly from it, the common theme that links together each
of the artists represented here is the belief in growth through
expression, which is fostered within a safe and supportive
environment, and is also aimed at integrating internal and external
experiences. Typically, artwork created in a therapeutic setting is
confidential. However, the artists represented in this exhibition
chose to share their work with an audience as a means of building
understanding and healing.

OPEN SOURCE DIGITAL MEDIA FESTIVAL AND PANEL DISCUSSION

Open Source Digital Media Festival

Open Source will be held October 28th from 6-9 pm at Fulton Street Collective located at 2000 W Fulton in Chicago, Illinois as part of the Illinois Art Therapy Association’s 31st Annual Conference. This year Open Source will feature the work of 7 collaborations between a digital artist and traditional media artist to highlight the interplay and transitions that occur between the two. The festival will start with the viewing of work, and will culminate with a panel including the artists involved in the festival along with figures in the expressive therapeutic fields. The panel will address the application of digital media in today’s landscape, the interplay between digital and traditional media, as well as ethical considerations. With this festival, IATA hopes to deepen the conversation of the use and adaptation of digital media in expressive therapies, as well as provide a larger scope of the possibilities of using digital media.

In honor of Artist Month, Fulton Street Collective will be opening its doors, its gallery, and its studios to the public. It’s been a huge year for FSC and we want to celebrate with our Chicago community. Tour the creative space where artists, fashion designers, musicians, and film-makers perfect their craft.
